Spelled Waters is the practice of me, Joshua Chamberlain, a designer and maker based in Wilkinsburg, PA. I prefer the constraints of a one-person practice to the compromises of capitalism and scale.
I sell via markets, local listings, and email.
Treen (wooden) goods typically start with drawings and a cardboard prototype. Wood is shaped and joined by hand tools, power tools, and the lathe. Sometimes a 3D model leads to printed iterations or CNC (robot) machined parts.
Wood species are selected for their mechanical properties, usually reclaimed or rescued from the scrap bin. I have a soft spot for signs of age or character.
Unless otherwise noted, penetrating oils like tung or linseed are used pure, or thinned with citrus solvent. A layer or two of wax may be buffed on (then off).
Repairs are a great way to avoid buying new shit. I would be honored to fix or refinish your treasured furniture or wooden objects on a sliding pay scale.
Jewelry and other small metal products are prototyped with wire or home 3D printing. Final products are generally produced with Shapeways, who start with a wax print and create a lost-wax casting in metal.
Graphic design and photography are things I will do for the right client—usually a tiny business or people who can't afford real pros.
